Our Growth Mindset is going to encourage and allow us to reach our highest potential in every subject area. Reading skills develop over time and can be frustrating to our child if they feel behind or are struggling with content vocabulary or comprehension skills. This takes time... and practice, practice, practice to gain the confidence we want to feel.
Math. It can be intimidating. (What is this "new math" anyway??) Math is all about developing new skills that build on one another. It is measurement of time, of space, of quantities. It is describing shapes, and patterns, and properties. It is dividing numbers, regions, and groups. It is adding numbers, parts of numbers, pieces of pizza, and marbles in a bag. Math is literally all around us, but can be easily ignored and confined to "math class."
We can believe that we are not great in math or reading or science, and not recognize that the skills it takes to make our masterpieces (those things we excel at: baking, budgeting, design, etc.) all require an expertise in one of these areas. We may not have even attempted some of these endeavors if we had a "fixed mindset" and believed it was too hard. If we change our Mindset about our accomplishments and how to overcome those things that seem hard at first, the sky is the limit! So what is a Mindset? It is truly life-changing. Please follow the links below to learn about the research that is making it possible for all students to learn to be successful, overcome challenges, and take risks that may have once felt impossible.
